Snap Lenses

Snap Inc operates the largest Augmented Reality platform known as Lenses, with over 400 million daily active users. I had the pleasure of being there from the early days, taking part in the steady advances in the AR space and witnessing tremendous community growth.

My role : 3D Designer / Technical Artist

Bacardi x Major Lazer

World’s first AR music video and the first lens to win a Cannes Lion award. As tech lead, I set art guidelines, optimized the experience, handled engine testing and final implementation, pushing the boundaries of AR storytelling.

Game of Thrones

World’s first AR Landmark Activation. I created one of the 3D dragons and helped with on-site testing and landmark data collection. Users were able to interact with the Flatiron Building and custom displays at SXSW. It was a fast-paced and fun campaign that gained well-deserved attention.

LA Rams Uniform Reveal

The world’s first AR uniform reveal. During the pandemic, the LA Rams partnered with Snap to let fans virtually try on their new uniforms. I focused on accurately recreating the 3D helmets and uniforms. Digital clones of Jared Goff and Aaron Donald made an appearance as well.

HBO’s Westworld

To replicate an iconic Westworld moment we captured users' faces and projection mapped them onto animated mechanical plates to reveal a robotic skull, accounting for camera distortion and view angles. Seeing Westworld actors use our lens on the red carpet was a welcome surprise.

AR Portals

These Lenses let the user walk through a portal into an interactive virtual environment. The biggest challenge is optimizing resources to fit everything into 2MB. I developed custom tools for scene management, baking, and final assembly. This allowed us to handle numerous textured assets and shared UV channels that each of these projects required.

And lots more Lenses combining 3D with various live tracking capabilities.

Did I mention that every Lens has to weigh no more than 4MB?
